Why He Matters

Long known for his incomparable ability to raise money and an unmatched enthusiasm for everything political, McAuliffe failed at the one thing he had never done: claim elected office.

He identified the economy and education as the most important issues facing Virginia.

The Economy

McAuliffe was touting his business credentials even before announcing his gubernatorial run. In a forum of gubernatorial hopefuls, he emphasized his experience starting five businesses in the region and said that the state's budget shortfall and the poor economy would be the top issue of 2009.

The Network

As the former DNC head of and perhaps the most well-connected Democrat in politics, McAuliffe's network is vast. His most powerful allies are two of the best-known politicians in America: President Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. McAuliffe is a former fundraiser and close friendof both Clintons.

The former DNC chair is also close to former House Minority Leader Dick Gephardt (D-Mo.), who is now a powerful Washington lobbyist. McAuliffe served as the finance chair for Gephardt's 1988 presidential campaign.
