In just three terms in office, McCotter has risen from freshman congressman to a driving force of the Republican Party's nationwide agenda.

Chairman of the House Republican Policy Committee since November 2006, this representative of Michigan's 11th Congressional District works with think tanks, party leaders and Republican supporters to develop the GOP's policy initiatives. It's an exclusive club: Past chairmen included former Vice President Dick Cheney, and ex-Reps. Henry Hyde (R-Ill.) and Christopher Cox (R-Calif.).

Path to Power

McCotter is a lifelong Michigan resident. He grew up in southeastern Michigan's Wayne County, graduated with a B.A. from the University of Detroit in 1987 and received a J.D. from the University of Detroit Law School in 1990.

The Issues

McCotter has voted with his Republican colleagues 91.4 percent of the time during the 111th Congress and 92.3 percent of the time throughout his congressional career.

McCotter is chairman of the House Republican Policy Committee, which fomulates conservative legislative proposals. The committee's membership includes the senior Republican members of the House Appropriations, Budget, Commerce, Rules, and Ways and Means committees, plus several additional elected delegates who represent each U.S. region. All members serve only by election or appointment.
