Paula Broadwell
The North Carolina-based writer met Petraeus in 2006 while attending Harvard's Kennedy School of Government. She gathered material for her book on visits with Petraeus in Kabul and elsewhere. Officials say Petraeus began a relationship with her after leaving the military and that it was broken off four months ago, after Broadwell sent harassing e-mails to another woman.

Jill Kelley
Kelley, 37, was an unpaid ''social liaison'' to the Florida-based U.S. Central Command and got to know David and Holly Petraeus and Gen. John R. Allen when the generals were commanders there. An alarmed Kelley reported the Broadwell e-mails to an FBI agent she knew, and a subsequent investigation uncovered the Petraeus-Broadwell relationship. The FBI then found between 20,000 and 30,000 pages of documents — most of them e-mails — between Kelley and Gen. Allen, a senior Defense Department official said.
