Tim Walz (D-Minn.)

U.S. Representative (since January 2007)

(Congress Bio Directory)

Why He Matters

A surprise beneficiary of the blue wave in the 2006 midterms, Walz was elected to represent Minnesota's 1st district. He quickly revealed his political acumen by reaching a power-sharing agreement that made him president of the freshman class through 2008. Facing a similar anti-incumbent wave in 2010, Walz overcame a challenge from Minnesota state Rep. Randy Demmer (R).

Walz presents himself as a centrist lawmaker concerned by the federal debt. His seats on the Agriculture Committee and on the Transportation Committee allow him to focus on meeting his substantially rural district's farming and infrastructure needs. Walz, who campaigned as a critic of the Iraq war, has supported Democrats' legislative priorities, starting with the 2009 stimulus plan and 2010 health-care reform, and he has played a leading role in efforts to repeal "Don't Ask Don't Tell".

The Issues

Walz has supported Democrats' domestic priorities, from an increase in the minimum wage and Barack Obama's 2009 stimulus plan to legislation imposing new regulations on the financial industry.

He is a co-sponsor of the Employee Free Choice Act, which would make it easier for unions to organize; he argues the bill can balance a process undermined by employer pressure and help employees in negotiations.

The Network

Walz has collaborated with fellow war veteran Rep. Patrick Murphy (D-Pa.) on repealing "Don't Ask Don't Tell," Walz has a powerful ally in Rep. Collin Peterson (D-Minn.), who chairs the House Agriculture Committee. Peterson and Walz represent the state's rural districts, making them natural partners on farming and energy issues; the two have also appeared together at local events.
