Path to Power

Tiahrt was born in South Dakota. After graduating from Evangel College, an Assembly of God university (Tiahrt's religion), he moved to Wichita to be closer to his wife's family. He worked for aerospace companies-Boeing and Zenith-before entering politics.

After a 1990 run for the state House of Representatives in which he lost to the incumbent by eight votes, Tiahrt was elected to the state Senate in 1992. Two years later, riding the Republican wave that gave control of Congress to Republicans for the first time in 40 years, Tiahrt took on, and beat, Glickman, then a popular Democratic incumbent .
