U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) is an independent agency that provides humanitarian assistance and economic development resources to countries around the world. Its programs are administered overseas by Foreign Service officers and developed in close cooperation with U.S. embassies. USAID provides grants, loans and technical assistant to other governments and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). It also develops plans for development programs and sends staffers to run these programs.
It focuses on work that includes improving health and population conditions; protecting the environment; promoting economic growth and agricultural development; and improving access to education and job training.
