Why He Matters

Cassidy was one of the few bright spots for House Republicans in November 2008 when he retook Louisiana's 6th district, an historically GOP area that was in Democratic hands for the six months leading up to the election. He won his 2nd term easily against a Democrat who raised little money.

A physician with a history of providing care to the uninsured, Cassidy was vocal in his opposition to the Democrats' 2010 health-care reform plan and offered his share of alternatives.

Captured on tape kissing another man’s wife, a married Republican congressman was urged Wednesday by the leader of the Louisiana GOP to resign from the seat he’s only held since November.

Path to Power

Born in Chicago in 1957, Cassidy was raised in Baton Rouge, La., where his father worked as a life-insurance salesman.

Cassidy attended Louisiana State University, earning his bachelor's in 1979 and his medical degree in 1983. During medical training he met his wife, a physician who once served as the chief of surgery at Earl K. Long Hospital, where Cassidy practiced and taught for 20 years.

The Issues

During the 111th Congress, Cassidy voted with his party 94 percent of the time.

Cassidy backed the December 2010 compromise bill renewing Bush-era tax cuts as well as funding for unemployment insurance.

The Network

Gov. Bobby Jindal (R-La.) was active behind the scenes during Cassidy's 2008 campaign, dispensing advice on pollsters, hosting private fundraisers and phoning national GOP figures.

In January 2010, Cassidy organized Baton Rouge phone banks to help Republican Sen. Scott Brown (Mass.), who was successfully running a special Senate election to replace the late Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-Mass.).
