Kim Holmes: Beware of discriminatory regulations

KIM HOLMES

Heritage Foundation

The United States has the potential of being the Saudi Arabia of natural gas. We could become an exporter. This could have a tremendous effect in the future on our economy if we do the right thing.

It’s no secret that the Obama administration has some problems with carbon-based energy whether it’s coal or oil or even gas. Therefore, there’s a greater inclination to embrace regulatory regimes that discriminate against them in some ways. The idea being that somehow, if the regulations can impose some kind of additional cost on these traditional sources of energy and then you use subsidies for renewables and others to give them a boost through an investment, this will level the playing field. The problem is that at the end of the day, the government can’t play that game efficiently.
