Announcement from Foreign Editor Douglas Jehl and Deputy Foreign Editor Karin Brulliard:
We’re happy to announce that Anna Fifield of the Financial Times is joining the Post as our next Tokyo bureau chief.
Anna has demonstrated remarkable agility and initiative through a series of high-profile assignments. She spent three years in Seoul as the FT’s Korea correspondent, and traveled to North Korea on 10 different occasions. She was also based in Tehran and Beirut as a Middle East correspondent, and spent four years in Washington as the newspaper’s U.S. political correspondent. Since last August, she has been a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University. Those who have worked with her call her a great colleague as well as a formidable competitor.
Anna speaks conversational Korean and has been brushing up on her high-school Japanese. She began her career in her native New Zealand. She begins work in the newsroom on June 9, and will head to Japan at the beginning of July to succeed Chico Harlan as he wraps up an enormously impressive four-year tour.
