Range

In addition to the efficiency, power and cleanliness of – for example –an Audi A8 L 3.0 TDI® clean diesel, there’s also the added benefit of extended range1 — the average distance you can drive before you need to fill the tank. Driving conditions, vehicle condition, weather and your own driving characteristics all factor into how far your Audi TDI® clean diesel can go, but with the extended range provided by increased fuel economy, the distance might surprise you.

Maximizing range
It begins, naturally, with fuel economy. By packing more density and power potential into every drop of fuel, an Audi TDI® clean diesel extends the range of every gallon of diesel fuel in the tank.1 Multiply that EPA-estimated fuel mileage by the total number of gallons held in the fuel tank, and you get a fairly good estimate of how far you can travel on a tank of fuel.

Of course, a lot of variables factor into maximizing the range you can experience in an Audi TDI® clean diesel vehicle. Stoplight-to-stoplight driving conditions in the city obviously take a negative toll on overall fuel economy, while extended trips on nothing but open interstate stretch the range to its fullest potential. Most drivers experience a combination of the two, so the EPA provides a “combined” fuel economy estimate, an estimate that weights the city value by 55 percent, and the highway value by 45 percent. We’ll use the combined number for our range calculation.

Other environmental factors weigh into the range you’ll actually experience. Ambient temperature, traffic and your driving style all have an impact.

Audi A8 L TDI® vs. Audi A8 L 3.0T
Both the Audi A8 L 3.0-liter TDI® clean diesel V6 and the Audi A8 L 3.0-liter TSFI® V6 provide outstanding power, acceleration and luxury. Each has advantages you’ll want to investigate and experience for yourself. For example, the A8 L 3.0T provides 333 hp, which translates into a zero-to-60 mph acceleration time of just 5.5 seconds. Meanwhile, the A8 L TDI® deals out a tremendous 406 lb-ft of torque at just 1,750 rpm, while still delivering a combined EPA estimate of 28 miles per gallon.1

When you factor in the fuel economy of the A8 L 3.0T with its 23.4-gallon fuel tank, the gasoline powered A8 L can deliver an impressive range of 491 combined miles on one tank of fuel.1 That’s the distance between Boston and Washington, D.C., with 50 miles to spare, or the distance from Los Angeles to Flagstaff, Ariz., with 10 miles to spare.

With the A8 L TDI® clean diesel, though, you extend your range by approximately 175 miles. On a full tank, you can pass right through Washington, D.C., from Boston, and drive right on through to Henderson, N.C., half way to Orlando, Fla. From Los Angeles, you’ll pass right on through Flagstaff and end up in Gallup, N.M., with nearly 15 miles to spare.

The difference equates to about 12 hours between fill-ups. Just be sure to rest up along the way.
