Mids short-handed
Navy will be without starting wide receivers Brandon Turner and Matt Aiken as well as promising linebacker Chris Johnson for the season opener. Aiken, a junior, hurt his knee during a preseason scrimmage, and Turner did not accompany the team to Ireland per Coach Ken Niumatalolo’s decision. The senior only recently rejoined the Midshipmen after initially failing his physical-readiness test required to clear all players to practice. Johnson, meantime, tore the ACL in his left knee.
Miller time
Junior quarterback Trey Miller is the new full-time quarterback after making one start last season, also against the Fighting Irish. In that game, Miller ran 19 times for 55 yards and completed 5 of 13 passes for 33 yards and a touchdown in a 56-14 loss. Miller appeared in seven games last season and had a career-best two touchdown passes and 126 yards in a 38-35 loss to East Carolina.
Calling Copeland
The Midshipmen also will have a new starting fullback in Noah Copeland. At 5 feet 10, 205 pounds, the sophomore is among the lightest to play the position during the triple-option era, but he impressed the coaching staff in spring practice with his rugged running style. Last season, Alexander Teich played fullback at 217 pounds, also relatively light for the position, and finished second on the team in rushing with 883 yards and four touchdowns.
