Austin Hollins scored 15 of his career-high 20 points in the first half as Minnesota jumped out to a big lead and cruised to a 72-36 victory over American in Minneapolis on Friday night in the season opener for both teams.
Stephen Lumpkins led American with nine points and John Schoof had eight. Rodney Williams added 16 points for Minnesota.
Hollins scored eight points during a 15-0 Gophers run to start the game, including a steal and dunk and a fast-break layup. He had two more steals and dunks during a 15-2 run that made it 34-8 with 5:39 to play in the first half. American had 14 first-half turnovers that led to 17 Minnesota points.
Minnesota shot 43.5 percent for the game, American 23.7 percent. The Gophers led 44-14 at the half.
●NAVY 75, MARYMOUNT (VA.) 48: Brandon Venturini scored 13 of his 16 points in the first half as the Midshipmen built a 20-point halftime lead en route to an easy victory over the Division III Saints in Annapolis.
Kendall Knorr, who had 10 points in the first half, finished with 13 for Navy. Venturini, who also had four assists, converted 4 of 7 three-point attempts.
Navy jumped out to an 18-6 lead before Marymount rallied to cut the deficit to two points, 26-24, behind a Khaleeq Everett fastbreak layup. The Midshipmen, however, converted their next seven shot attempts and held Marymount scoreless over the final 3:56 of the first half to take a 45-25 halftime lead.
Navy extended its lead to 30 in the second half, 71-41, behind a three-pointer from Venturini.
Antonio Rouse had nine points and Reed Scott added eight for Marymount.
Sophomore forward Sarah Imovbioh had a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds in her collegiate debut to lead Virginia to a 78-57 victory over James Madison in Charlottesville in the season opener for both teams.
Imovbioh made e8 of 9 field goal attempts and also had 10 rebounds for Virginia. Ataira Franklin added 20 points and five steals.
Kirby Burkholder led James Madison with 25 points.
●GEORGE WASHINGTON 80, TEXAS-ARLINGTON 47: Danni Jackson scored 13 points to lead four players in double figures as the Colonials beat the visiting Mavericks at Smith Center.
Megan Nipe and Chakecia Miller had 12 points each for George Washington and Shi-Heria Shipp added 11 points. Sara Mostafa led the team with 11 rebounds.
Malaika Green and Laila Suleiman led Texas-Arlington with eight points each.
●IONA 74, NAVY 64: The Gaels shot nearly 50 percent from the field and held the Midshipmen to22 second-half points in New Rochelle, N.Y., in the the season opener for both programs.
Damika Martinez scored a game-high 26 points for Iona. Navy was led by Kara Pollinger with 17 points, and M.L. Morrison added 12.
●OLD DOMINION 55, VIRGINIA TECH 35: The Monarchs went into Blacksburg, Va., and pulled out a convincing win over the Hokies, using a key 11-2 run in the first half to take a lead they would never relinquish.
Jackie Cook led the way for Old Dominion with 17 points and nine rebounds. Virginia Tech was paced by Porschia Hadley and Lauren Evans, who had eight points apiece.
●OAKLAND 62, GEORGE MASON 58: Annemarie Hamlet had 19 points to lead the host Grizzlies to a win in Rochester, Mich., in the season opener for both teams. The Patriots were led by Amber Easter and Janaa Pickard, who each had 12 points.
●ST. FRANCIS 69, HOWARD 61: Alli Williams totaled 20 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Red Flash past the visiting Bison in Loretto, Pa.
Saadia Doyle led Howard with 21 points and seven rebounds and Cheyenne Curly-Payne added 18 points.
