College basketball season kicks off Friday for area teams

Area college basketball teams kick off the madness on Friday night with season-opening celebrations.

Maryland

When: 7 p.m.

Where: Comcast Center.

Admission: Free.

TV: Comcast SportsNet Plus will show the event starting at 7:30. Comcast SportsNet will re-air the event at 9.

Details: The men’s and women’s teams — and their new uniforms — will be introduced. There will be a student dunk contest judged by former Maryland football players Torrey Smith, LaQuan Williams and Josh Wilson and former basketball players Walt Williams, Juan Dixon and Dave Neal.

Georgetown

When: 8 p.m.

Where: McDonough Arena.

Admission: Wristband distribution for students begins at 6:30.

Details: The Hoyas women’s team will be introduced at 9:20 and the men’s team at 9:45. Hip-hop legend Doug E. Fresh also will perform.

George Mason

When: 9 p.m.

Where: Patriot Center.

Admission: Free.

Details: The men’s and women’s teams will be introduced, with the men’s team holding a scrimmage. Entertainment will be provided by Doc Nix and the Green Machine, among others.

Washington

When: 8 p.m.

Where: Conmy Hall at Fort Myer (in Arlington).

Admission: Free tickets are required. Remaining available tickets can be picked up at the Smith Center box office through the end of the GW volleyball team’s match against La Salle on Friday evening.

Details: The Colonials men’s and women’s teams will be introduced in GW’s return to Fort Myer, where the men’s team played from 1956 to 1975. The U.S. Army Band, Drill Team and Color Guard will perform.
