American men’s basketball preview

November 5, 2013

American

The Eagles changed coaches in the offseason with the hiring of Mike Brennan to replace Jeff Jones, who departed for Old Dominion. Brennan is no stranger to American or the D.C. area, having been an assistant under Jones from 2007 through ’09 and most recently serving as John Thompson III’s top assistant at Georgetown.

Brennan was part of a staff at American that directed the Eagles to two NCAA tournament berths, and he’ll have some work to do to get the program back to that level. American is coming off a 10-20 season, finishing tied for fifth place in the Patriot League, and loses three starters, most notably top two scorers Stephen Lumpkins and Daniel Munoz.

Brennan and his staff are set to implement a motion offense similar to that of Georgetown. The top players back include junior guard-forward John Schoof (W.T. Woodson High), who averaged 9.6 points last season and was the team’s third-leading scorer. Among the newcomers are six freshmen and junior guard Darius Gardner, who sat out last season after transferring from Stephen F. Austin.
