Maryland men’s soccer to take on California in NCAA quarterfinals

NCAA men’s soccer quarterfinal

Maryland at California

Where: Edwards Stadium, Berkeley, Calif.

When: 4:30 p.m.

Internet: www.CalBears.com

Records: No. 5 Terrapins 15-3-5; No. 4 Bears 14-4-2.

At stake: College Cup semifinal berth against No. 8 Virginia next Friday at PPL Park in Chester, Pa.

Outlook: Making their ninth quarterfinal appearance in 12 years, the Terrapins are seeking to win their 10th straight match and avenge an overtime loss at Cal in the second game of the season. They have conceded three goals during this streak — the same number scored by the Bears in that first meeting. The Cal result was Maryland’s only away loss of the year. Senior F Patrick Mullins’s 16 goals are tied for first in the national scoring race. (The other two players with 16 have completed the season.) Three-time quarterfinalist Cal is pursuing its first College Cup appearance. Cal’s leading scorer is a defender, senior Steve Birnbaum, who has 10 goals.
