Navy basketball preview

Navy

Last season, Coach Ed DeChellis had to play freshmen out of necessity on a team that lacked depth. This season, the Midshipmen are expecting much more from their reserves in DeChellis’s third year in Annapolis. Navy won 11 games combined during his first two seasons, but DeChellis’s record during his third season at his last two stops bodes well for the Midshipmen.

During his first head coaching stint at East Tennessee State, the team went from 11-16 to 17-11 in his third season. Then, at Penn State, DeChellis directed the Nittany Lions to a 15-15 record after they went 7-23 in his second year. Navy has not been .500 or better since 2008-09.

The Midshipmen have back their entire starting lineup from last season. Junior forward Worth Smith led Navy in scoring (10.2) and rebounding (5.2) and was third in the Patriot League in blocks (1.2). Sophomore point guard Tilman Dunbar started all 31 games last season and finished second in the league in assists (4.9) and second on the team in scoring (9.5).
