The University of Maryland hired Gary Williams yesterday as basketball coach, hoping the 44-year-old alumnus will bring the school a competitive and turmoil-free program.

It was appropriate that Maryland won its NCAA tournament game -- the first since an unjust NCAA probation -- on a court in Kansas, home to the NCAA, the dictatorial governing body that crippled the Maryland basketball program three years ago.
