Baseball: Paul VI Coach Billy Emerson to step down at end of season

March 9, 2012

Billy Emerson, who built Paul VI Catholic into one of the region’s top baseball teams, will resign after this season, his 10th at the Fairfax private school. Emerson, who was the 2007 All-Met Coach of the Year, will remain as the school’s athletic director.

“For a couple years now, I’ve had five or six balls up in the air at a time and juggling a lot of stuff,” said Emerson, who has three children ages 12, 10 and 5 and recently started work on a master’s degree in educational leadership. “This is going to free me up.”

Assistant coach Jeff Nolan will be the Panthers’ next head coach.

Emerson, who previously coached at Annandale and T.C. Williams for three seasons, has a career record of 217-114 with two Washington Catholic Athletic Conference titles.

“It’s certainly not easy, but it’s time for another chapter in my life,” Emerson said.
