Doug Kapustin/FOR THE WASHINGTON POST - Howard-bound Imani Bailey is a big reason Meade is the favorite to repeat as county champion.
Top teams
Meade (19-6); South River (18-7); Broadneck (17-7)
Top players
G Domonique Hagins, South River, 5-5, Sr.
G Imani Bailey, Meade, 5-8, Sr.
G Kameron Ward, Broadneck, 5-8, Jr.
G/F Jamie McKeither, Meade, 5-11, Sr.
G/F Sandra Davis, Arundel, 5-10, Sr.
Skinny
Led by the Howard-bound Bailey, Meade returns enough firepower to begin the season as the favorite to repeat as county champion. First-year Coach Reggie Leach wants his team to rely less on its transition game this season, making McKeither an important piece as an inside scoring threat. . . .
South River beat Meade twice last season, including in the 4A East semifinals. Hagins (13 ppg, 5 apg) runs the show for the Seahawks and will be part of a high-scoring back court with juniors Bre Bolden and Aleeyah Hopkins. . . . Broadneck is a darkhorse contender behind its do-everything point guard Ward (12 ppg) and a pair of experienced post players — seniors Dinah Jones and Kimber Salvas. . . .
Arundel (12-12) struggled last season following up its 2010 state title run but has plenty of talent led by Davis, who is dangerous in the post and on the perimeter, and defensive stopper Savannah Smith.
