Doug Kapustin/FOR THE WASHINGTON POST - Oakland Mills' Jasmine Hill should have the Scorpions near the front of the Howard County pack.
Top teams
Glenelg (24-2); Oakland Mills (19-6); Howard (20-6)
Top players
G Jasmine Hill; Oakland Mills, 5-11, Sr.
G Brittany Butler; Howard, 5-9, Sr.
G Samantha Heisig; Glenelg, 5-8, Jr.
G Danielle Russo; Glenelg, 5-6, Jr.
G/F Kelly Jones; Mount Hebron, 5-9, Sr.
Skinny
Glenelg rolled through its league schedule unbeaten last season with a squad that only featured one senior. The Gladiators return a deep and talented lineup that might be even more motivated after a loss to Calvert in last year’s 2A South final. . . . Oakland Mills should present a challenge behind Hill, who led the county in both scoring (20.3 ppg) and rebounding (9.5 rpg) last season. The Scorpions return four starters in all, including guard Kara Hight (12.1 ppg). . . .
Howard lost seven of its top nine players, but Butler (Loyola) should help keep the Lions near the top of the league. . . . River Hill (12-10) added Howard transfer Alauna Jackson (9.1 ppg) to a strong returning contingent. ... Mount Hebron (11-10) will have one of the league’s top back courts led by seniors Jones and Knowlej Thomas, who combined to average 26 points per game last season. . . . Long Reach (5-16) also only graduated one senior and could be a team to watch.
