Two-time defending district champion Mount Vernon’s only losses last season were to eventual state champion Oakton, by 30 and 24 points, the latter result in the region semifinals. The Majors return four double-figure scorers — Dunham (Navy), Loftus (Hofstra), Webster (Barton) and junior F Samantha Porter — and expect three freshmen to get minutes. . . . In the eight-school district, Mount Vernon and Edison were the only teams to finish with winning records last season. . . . Washington-Lee could finish in the upper tier with Cooper and G Tatianna Torres, both first-team all-district selections a year ago. . . . Hayfield sophomore G Raven Lott scored 25 points in a win over Stafford last week; Wakefield’s Olivia Baines scored 19 points in a win over South County. . . . Stuart has gone winless the past two-plus seasons.
