Chantilly cross-country star Sean McGorty commits to Stanford

By Carl Little,

Sean McGorty, far and away the top cross-country runner in the region, made a verbal commitment to Stanford on Sunday. The Chantilly senior was one of the nation’s most coveted recruits, drawing interest from hundreds of colleges before whittling down his choices to Virginia, Princeton, Georgetown and the Cardinal.

McGorty, an All-Met and Footlocker all-American, was undefeated this season, winning all three of his postseason races by a staggering average margin of 48 seconds. He captured the Virginia AAA Northern Region title in 14:19, the second-fastest time ever produced on the 2.98-mile Burke Lake Park course. One week later McGorty won his first individual state championship in state meet-record time while also leading the Chargers to their-first ever team title.
