Football preview: Maryland independents/others

Around the area: Georgetown Prep will have to overcome the loss of star LB and team leader Andrew Caskin to a torn ACL, but have the personnel to do so with a veteran offensive line and athletic senior quarterback Corey Howard, who was second-team All Met in baseball this spring. . . . Avalon (7-4), which established itself as a recruiting hot bed when it sent two players to division I schools after last season is low in numbers , but high in talent. Defensive lineman Bert Mayo is garnering Football Bowl Subdivision interest, and tailback/defensive back Isaac Boyd is also on colleges’ radars. . . .

Annapolis Area Christian is entering its seventh year of football but was bumped down to the MIAA C division after an 0-10 finish in the MIAA B. The Eagles do have senior WR/DB Demetrius Johnson, who’s slowly becoming one of the most sought after recruits in the area. . . . St. Mary’s-Annapolis returns junior quarterback Bryce Carrasco and senior receiver Liam Kelly. Kelly caught 49 passes for 1,009 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2012. . . . This will be the third season for Spalding in the MIAA A division. The Cavaliers will rely on senior QB Zach Abey, a Buffalo recruit, to run the read-option. . . . Pallotti has nearly doubled its roster size to 40 players in 2013 and will be aided by RB/LB KJ Jernigan, who transferred from DeMatha. Pete Grenchik, 6-3, 305-pound tackle, is one to watch this season. . . . Severn is making the jump from MIAA C to MIAA B.
