Favorite: Wootton (4-6)

The Patriots were one of the youngest teams in the region a year ago but return a dynamic duo in junior quarterback Sam Ellis and sophomore receiver Trevon Diggs. Both possess big-play potential in an offense that can give defensive coordinators fits.

Contenders: Bethesda-Chevy Chase (7-4), Whitman (5-5)

Around the league:

Bethesda-Chevy Chase features three seniors on the offensive and defensive lines, though they’re breaking in a new quarterback in senior Jack Hanifee; Whitman brings back running back Zac Morton, who ran for a region-best 1,357 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2012. Morton also had two interceptions as a safety. . . .

Churchill is dealing with the unexpected transfer of running back Malik Harris, who enrolled at Friendship Collegiate Academy this preseason. Harris ran for 898 yards and eight touchdowns a year ago, and will be replaced by a trio of backs in junior Blake Dove, junior Marquette Lewis and sophomore Andrew Zuckerman. . . . After winning two state titles as Quince Orchard’s offensive coordinator, Josh Klotz is taking the head coaching reins at Richard Montgomery . Klotz will bring the no-huddle to the Rockets’ offense. Junior running back/defensive end Josh Dyson could be one to keep an eye on. . . . Johnson will have a tough time replacing quarterback Gus Gill, who threw for 1,139 yards and a region-best 19 touchdowns a year ago.
