Williams used that pick-six speed offensively, too, proving nearly impossible to bring down. Williams scrambled out of an often-collapsing pocket time and time again, rolling wide or stepping through the Prep line to complete unlikely passes in key situations.
The Mustangs converted seven of 12 third downs, and on five of those conversions Williams threw passes of ten or more yards or more, one of which was a touchdown. He also converted a fourth and 21, finding a wide open Camari Murray for a 24-yard score.
“Our plan was to get the ball in space to our athletes,” Williams said. “We wanted to keep the tempo up and give guys a chance to make plays.”
McNamara needed those third-and-long conversions desperately, as they incurred 15 penalties for 115 yards. But Williams nearly always answered the bell. At one point, the Mustangs took two straight false start penalties, setting up a third and 13. Williams scrambled and found receiver Jordan Crockett for a 13-yard gain.
“I say we’re lucky,” said Bishop McNamara coach Keith Goganious, who forced his players to run sprints after the penalty-heavy showing. “We’re getting penalties for no reason. We had 15 this week, 15 last week...that’s a very good football team and we just had a little more than they had tonight.”
Murray proved Williams’s go-to weapon, catching eight passes for 115 yards in addition to his eight carries for 18 yards. Prep also struggled to slow down Crockett, who caught five passes for 95 yards.
Prep’s Corey Howard threw for 86 yards on 8 of 16 passing. Four of those passes found Steve Johnston, who recorded the Little Hoyas’ only touchdown of the game when he reeled in an 11 yard lob from Howard.
