NORTHWEST TOPPLES QUINCE ORCHARD. . . AGAIN: E.J. Lee rushed for 103 yards and Matt Watson added three touchdowns as the No. 14 Jaguars upset the Cougars on their home field for the second time this month to win the Maryland 4A West championship in Gaithersburg.

Northwest (10-2) jumped out to a 20-0 lead early in the second quarter after two big plays by Watson, a eight-yard touchdown catch from quarterback Mark Pierce and a 29-yard touchdown run.

No. 8 Quince Orchard (10-2), which reached the last two Maryland 4A state finals, rallied to within 20-14 late in the second quarter on a 54-yard touchdown run by Kevin Joppy and an 11-yard touchdown run by Shawn Barlow.

Watson’s 20-yard touchdown run with less than two minutes left in the fourth quarter sealed the win for Northwest.

“We came out and did what we needed to do,” senior cornerback Josh Gills said, “and we got the win.”

The Jaguars will visit 4A North champion Paint Branch (11-1) in next week’s state semifinals.

BROAD RUN WINS BATTLE OF THE BURN: Brady Reitzel’s quarterback draw with 45.2 seconds left gave Broad Run the lead and the Spartans’ defense held on to beat No. 11 Stone Bridge — for the first time in school history — 23-21.

MEADE ’S BOLD CALL PAYS OFF: The No. 17 Mustangs scored a touchdown with less than 1 minute remaining, then went for a two-point conversion. Jamarkeus Hammond pounded the ball into the end zone to give the Mustangs a 22-21 victory over Arundel.

Meade (10-2) will return to the 4A state semifinals for the second consecutive year. The Mustangs will travel to face the winner of Saturday’s game between Suitland and DuVal.

Coach Rich Holzer said the Mustangs have not run the two-point conversion play all season. They were saving it for an occasion like this one, down by one point with 48 seconds remaining against the team that beat them in overtime in Week 10 of the regular season.

“I wasn’t letting that overtime situation happen again,” Holzer said. “We were going to control our own destiny. We were either going to win it or lose it by our own hands.”

The play was designed to draw the defense to running back Kyle Evans, who went out on a sweep and cleared a hole for Hammond. Evans finished with 135 rushing yards on 28 carries.

PATUXENT MARCHES ON TO 2A SEMIS: In a battle of top-10 unbeatens, the No. 10 Panthers overcame a pair of costly fumbles, and Tyler Crounse’s 13-yard touchdown run with 2 minutes, 31 seconds to play was the difference in a 2A South region final win over No. 7 Gwynn Park. Much more on this game to come later.●●●

RIVER HILL 28, RESERVOR 0: Running back Chris Galloway rushed for a 50-yard touchdown on the first play from scrimmage, leading the Hawks (10-2) to their third straight Maryland 3A East region title and their eighth region crown in the past nine seasons.

Galloway finished with 61 yards on six carries after missing the previous five games with an ankle injury.

“We knew we had to come out on the first play and smack them in the mouth,” Galloway said.”

River Hill, the two-time defending state champions, will face Maryland 3A West champion Linganore (11-1) in a state semifinal next week.

Reservoir (8-4) had challenged River Hill in a 14-13 Hawks win in the teams’ regular season finale on Nov. 8, but the Hawks had little trouble Friday in the rematch.

Running back Kalonji Moore ran for 125 yards and scored River Hill’s other three touchdowns, each from four yards out.

WESTFIELD 21, ROBINSON 14: Their first regular-season meeting was decided by a missed extra point, and this game was another close one, but in the end, Tyler Thrasher-Walker the ninth-ranked Bulldogs were too much for their Concorde District rivals.

NO. 4 BRIAR WOODS 49, MOUNTAIN VIEW 7: Trace McSorley threw five touchdown passes to lead the Falcons to another convincing playoff win in Ashburn. Briar Woods will host Ashburn rival Broad Run in next week’s Virginia 5A North semifinals.

WOODGROVE 49, EASTERN VIEW 7: So much for seeding in the 4A North. Josh Sweet rushed for 345 yards and tied his single-game school record with six touchdowns on 35 carries to power the sixth-seeded Wolverines to a blowout road win at third-seeded Eastern View.

FOREST PARK 27, VARINA 8: One week after notching the first playoff win in school history, the Bruins doubled their pleasure with a dominant performance on the road at top-seeded Varina.
