Girls’ basketball: Forest Park, Potomac (Va.) appear set to play at last

By ,

The Forest Park-No. 11 Potomac (Va.) game has been delayed by weather, exams and a power outage, which makes one wonder what might prevent the Virginia AAA Cardinal District matchup from finally occurring Wednesday at Potomac.

If Forest Park (14-5, 8-1) wins, the teams would meet again Saturday in a playback that would determine the regular season district champion.

The Bruins, who have lost to Potomac (16-2, 9-0) four straight times after beating them 19 times in the previous 20 meetings, are on a six-game winning streak entering their game Tuesday against Osbourn Park.

“We felt at the beginning of the season that we had something kind of good going on here but that we really needed to find a rhythm and some consistency,” Forest Park Coach Rebecca Tillett said. “In the past six games, it seems like we’ve found some of that.”

The game Wednesday will pit Potomac’s post players, 6-foot-3 seniors Amber Porter (28.4 ppg) and Jonae’ Guest (12.7 ppg), against the Bruins’ guards, senior Breyana Mason (26.3 ppg) and three others averaging more than nine points each.

Forest Park, with no six-footer, lost 60-38 to Potomac on Dec. 14. Porter had 25 points and Mason had 20.

In recent games, Forest Park has gotten increased offensive output from sophomore guard Mia Lloyd, who scored a season-high 20 points against Gar-Field in her last outing, and junior guard Amber Mixon has reached double figures in the last five outings, the same number of double-figure games she had all season before her current streak.

“As a staff, what we’ve been trying to figure out is the best way to fit these great pieces of the puzzle together,” Tillett said. “There’s a lot of sharing of the basketball. I think that will make us a little more difficult to prepare for than [before].”
