H.D. Woodson girls’ basketball coach placed on administrative leave following altercation
By Roman Stubbs,
H.D. Woodson girls’ basketball Coach Henry Anglin has been placed on administrative leave by D.C. Public Schools pending an investigation into his alleged role in an altercation at Ballou last month, a source close to the investigation confirmed Wednesday.
No time table has been set for the investigation to conclude, meaning Anglin could miss next week’s DCIAA tournament, which begins Feb. 28. The Warriors are currently being coached by assistant Mike Gray, H.D. Woodson Principal Richard Jackson said on Tuesday.
Anglin could not be reached for comment on Wednesday.
Anglin has not coached the Warriors since the alleged altercation took place following the team’s 63-24 win over Ballou on Jan. 24. On Tuesday, Ballou Coach Andrew Gaston said that he and his players witnessed a physical altercation outside the Southeast school after the game was over, but couldn’t confirm if Anglin was involved. Anglin did not coach two nights later when his team played against Riverdale Baptist on January 26.
“All my players were with us, looking from inside. My team had nothing to do with that. That’s all I know,” Gaston said of the incident. “There was some sort of altercation, but we didn’t know who it was.”
Jackson declined to comment further, as did H.D. Woodson athletic director LaQurisha Gray and DCPS athletic director Stephanie Evans.
Anglin’s placement on administrative leave marks the second time in four months that an H.D. Woodson coach has been the subject of a DCPS investigation. In October, former football coach Greg Fuller was fired after the school district discovered the use of an ineligible player.
Anglin is in his first year as head coach at H.D. Woodson after replacing Frank Oliver, who guided the school to the city title last season. The 11th-ranked Warriors (18-8) have won six of eight games since Jan. 24, including a 66-19 victory over Ballou on Tuesday night. H.D. Woodson will host Spingarn in their regular season finale on Friday.
