Maryland field hockey roundup: Bethesda-Chevy Chase beats Churchill in 4A West final

Lizzi Orr knew she was playing the biggest field hockey game of her young high school career on Wednesday, and the Bethesda-Chevy Chase sophomore forward was determined to make the most of it.

Orr scored twice, including the game-winner from a sharp angle less than a minute into the second half, leading B-CC (13-4) to a 4-2 win over Churchill (12-3) in the Maryland 4A West regional final at Walter Johnson.

“We all knew that this was do or die,” Orr said. “We just put our hearts into it and played well as a team.”

The third-seeded Barons have won 13 state championships in school history, but they have an inexperienced roster this year and weren’t expected to make it back to their first state tournament since 2008.

Junior forward Zoe Ibson and junior back Luci Leahy also scored for Bethesda-Chevy Chase, and sophomore Kiley Goodwin made six saves and held the top-seeded Bulldogs scoreless in the second half.

Senior midfielder Mairin Hall and junior forward Jennifer Shim each scored for Churchill.

“This [regional title] is probably the most memorable we’ve won,” Barons Coach Amy Wood said. “Because if you told me we were going to win it at the beginning of the season, I [wouldn’t have been] so sure.”

Springbrooks wins region

Gisel Diaz, Colleen Connelly, Cassidy O’Hearn and Erin Ingeholm each scored for Springbrook (12-2), which cruised to its second region championship in four years with a 4-1 win over Montgomery County rival Blake (10-5) in the Marlyand 4A South final at Walter Johnson.

Senior goalkeeper Brittany Lambert made four saves, and Connelly’s blast from the top of the circle with 21 minutes 56 seconds left in the second half made it 2-0 and proved to be the game-winner.

“I pulled to the right and just cranked it,” Connelly said. “I’m just glad that it went in.”

Severna Park gets revenge

Severna Park (15-2) avenged two regular season losses to its biggest Anne Arundel County rival, earning a 4-2 upset of host South River (16-2) in the Maryland 4A East championship.

Marissa Balleza scored twice for the Falcons, who will advance to their ninth consecutive state tournament after ousting South River in the regional playoffs for the fifth year in a row.

“Severna Park was on its game tonight and we were off,” South River Coach Katie Corcoran said. “When you’re off in the playoffs, it sends you home.”

Parker powers Glenelg

Reigning All-Met Player of the Year Alyssa Parker had a goal and two assists in the Maryland 2A East championship game, leading defending Maryland 2A state champion Glenelg (16-1) to its fourth consecutive state tournament appearance with a 3-0 win over Marriotts Ridge (12-4).

Meagan Guthrie and Stephanie Asher also scored for Glenelg. . . .

Other local regional champions crowned Wednesday were Mount Hebron in the 3A East, Huntingtown in the 3A South and Poolesville in the 2A West. . . .

The Maryland state field hockey tournament continues next week, with the 4A and 3A semifinals on Monday, and the 2A and 1A semifinals on Wednesday.

The 4A and 2A semfinals will be held at Broadneck, and the 3A and 1A semifinals will be at Franklin High School in Reisterstown.
