McDonough beats North Point on crazy play in final minutes
By Greg Schimmel,
In a chaotic finish, McDonough scored 28 unanswered points in the fourth quarter, including the game-winning touchdown after their own field goal attempt was blocked in the closing minutes, to beat North Point , 28-21, in a Southern Maryland Athletic Conference game in Pomfret.
McDonough (7-0, 5-0 SMAC) trailed 21-20 with less than two minutes to play when North Point blocked the potential go-ahead field goal attempt and a North Point player picked up the ball before it was blown dead.
Rams defensive backs coach Mike Rucker alerted senior linebacker Christian Cole that the ball was still live, Cole walked over and took it out of the North Point player’s hands, then sprinted about 25 yards to the end zone for the go-ahead score.
“He walked over nonchalantly, took a couple steps with the ball then took off on a dead sprint,” McDonough Coach Luke Ethington said. “It was the most bizarre play I have ever seen. It was incredible.”
The McDonough rally started early in the fourth quarter when quarterback Devone Boone found James Harrell and Lucas Ethington Jr. for touchdown passes on consecutive drives.
Junior running back Bobby Harris scored a rushing touchdown to cut the lead to 21-20 before the PAT attempt was blocked, then a quick defensive stop by the Rams defense and a punt return by Harrell set up the late field goal attempt.
The win is the Rams’ first against North Point (4-3, 3-3) since 2008.
