The same matchup would have taken place last season, as well, but School Without Walls was unable to compete because of a shortage of available players. On Saturday, School Without Walls was without its star pitcher, senior Tai Schroeder, and the Penguins (10-3) struggled in her absence.
Georgetown Visitation held a five-run lead entering the top of the fourth and proceeded to send 15 batters to the plate that frame. Among the players who batted twice that inning were freshman third baseman Caitlyn Fischer and sophomore catcher Juliette Lewis. The pair combined to tally seven RBI in the fourth alone and 10 on the game.
The Cubs will lose just three seniors on a squad that finished the season 9-8, and Fischer and Lewis form the core of a 2013 squad Conlon said has considerable potential. The coach praised Fischer’s ability to adapt when the team asked her entering this season to transition from center field (her travel team position) to third base and lauded Lewis’s powerful arm behind the plate.
“They’re both developing very well, and they’re going to be a big part of our success in the future,” Conlon said.
Fischer, the team’s leadoff hitter, went 3 for 5 with six RBI and a walk Saturday. She said her confidence at the plate has surged this year, which contributed to her strong showing as a first-year varsity player.
“I just focused more, got my head into it,” Fischer said. “That was really the big difference. I mentally felt like I could do it, so I just came out and did it.”
The Cubs offered more than enough support for junior pitcher Kate Silk, who allowed four hits and three walks in a complete game performance. Silk is yet another reason why Georgetown Visitation is certain next year’s squad will build off this season’s performance.
“It was hard last year because we lost seven seniors,” Lewis said, “so to still be competitive, it was really nice this season.”
