Softball: Woodgrove cruises to first Virginia AA title with 9-0 win over Broadway
By Greg Schimmel,
“It just hit me that this is it, it’s over,” the Woodgrove senior pitcher said. “I’m just really glad we won.”
Reid pitched a two-hit shutout with six strikeouts, and homered in the second inning to lead Woodgrove to a 9-0 win over Broadway on Saturday in the Virginia AA softball championship game at Radford University.
The win gave the Wolverines (27-2) their first softball state title in the Purcellville school’s second year of existence, and a feeling of redemption after they lost in the championship game to county rival Briar Woods last year.
“We talked about it on the bus that we needed to redeem ourselves,” Reid said. “This feels a lot better. We’ve made our mark on Woodgrove history.”
Reid was in command of the Gobblers (24-5) throughout on Saturday, taking a no-hitter into the sixth and never allowing more than one base runner in any inning.
Her solo home run on a lined shot to left-center opened the scoring in the second inning, and the Wolverines tacked on two more in the second on a two-run single by junior shortstop Alayna Furr, who finished 4 for 4 with three RBI and two runs scored.
“We put the bat on the ball and made the other team handle it,” Woodgrove Coach Joe Spicer said. “We found a lot of holes and that made a big difference.
Woodgrove added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on RBI singles by Haney and junior first baseman Delanie Daughtry, then put the game further out of reach in the sixth when three hits, a walk and two Broadway errors led to four more runs.
Reid never let up even as the lead grew, and she fittingly ended up with the last out in her glove.
“She’s just unbelievably big-hearted,” Spicer said. “She’s at her best when the games are most critical.”
