St. Albans, National Cathedral win inaugural DCSAA championship

St. Albans outlasted Maret in penalty kicks, 5-3, after a scoreless regulation and overtime to win the inaugural D.C. Statewide Athletic Association boys’ soccer championship Saturday evening at Wilson High.
Both teams had opportunities to score in the second half. Maret had several looks at Duffy on crosses — and St. Albans’ striker Arjan Ganji hit the post on a free kick midway through the half. St. Albans (18-2-1) converted three of its first penalty kicks, while Maret (12-5-1) missed on its third attempt, which hit the cross bar. Duffy finished with five saves.
In the girls’ final, National Cathedral used a Marta Sniezek goal in the 30th minute of the first half to beat Sidwell Friends 1-0 Saturday. National Cathedral finished the season 16-2-2, and outscored its last three opponents 16-1.
