Homegrown D.C. basketball stars: Kevin Durant, Roy Hibbert, Elgin Baylor and more

The Washington, D.C. area has produced a plethora of basketball stars through the years. Here’s a look at some of the area’s top players.

Three-time NBA All-Star forward Kevin Durant starred at Montrose Christian High School before bursting onto the national scene at Texas. Durant, the 2006 All-Met player of the year, led the NBA in scoring the past three regular seasons while playing for the Oklahoma City Thunder.

An 11-time NBA All-Star and 10-time All-NBA First Team selection, Elgin Baylor got his start at Phelps High before transfering to newly-opened Spingarn in 1954. When the two schools met that season, Baylor scored 64 points to lead the Green Wave to victory. Baylor averaged 31 points per game in three collegiate seasons (one at Idaho, two at Seattle), was drafted No. 1 overall by the Minneapolis Lakers in 1958 and finished his career with more than 23,000 career points. Baylor was selected to play in 11 NBA All-Star games and had his No. 22 jersey retired by the Los Angeles Lakers.

A product of Reston's South Lakes High, Grant Hill went on to win two national championships at Duke. In 18 NBA seasons, Hill has been named to seven NBA All-Star teams. He earned ACC player of the year honors in 1994 and was named to the All-NBA first team in 1997 while playing with the Pistons.

A Hoya through and through, Indiana Pacers center Roy Hibbert will play in his first All-Star game this weekend in Orlando. Hibbert played at Georgetown Prep before starring with the Georgetown Hoyas for four years.

A two-time NBA champion, 10-time All-Star and the 1995 NBA MVP, David Robinson is one of basketball's all-time great post players. Nicknamed 'The Admiral' as a player at the U.S. Naval Academy, he finished his collegiate career as a two-time consensus All-American and was later named to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Robinson graduated from Osbourn Park High in Manassas, Va.

One of the area's all-time greats, Dave Bing led a talented Spingarn High team to three straight Inter-high championship games, earning Parade All-American honors in 1962. Bing led Syracuse in three consecutive seasons and was named a consensus All-American. Drafted second overall by the Detroit Pistons in 1966, Bing went on to score more than 18.000 career points, was selected to seven NBA All-Star teams and was later named one of the 50 greatest players in NBA history.

DeMatha graduate Danny Ferry (right) won the Naismith Award as college basketball's best player in 1989 after leading Duke University to three Final Fours in four seasons. Selected No. 2 overall in the 1989 NBA draft, Ferry went on to play 13 seasons in the NBA -- most with the Cleveland Cavaliers. He helped the San Antonio Spurs to an NBA title in 2003.

A two-time first-team All-Met, Keith Bogans led DeMatha to a 34-1 record and the No. 3 national ranking in 1999. Bogans started all four years at Kentucky, earning All-America honors as a senior. He is currently a reserve for the New Jersey Nets -- his seventh team in nine NBA seasons.

Nicknamed 'The Wizard,' Walt Williams averaged a school-record 26.8 points per game in his senior season at Maryland, earning second-team All-America honors. The high sock-wearing sharpshooter scored more than 8,000 career points during an 11-year NBA career. Williams retired after the 2003 season.

Former St. Joseph's star Delonte West teamed with Jameer Nelson to form one of the nation's best backcourts in 2004, leading the Hawks to a 32-2 record and an Elite Eight appearance. The 2001 All-Met player of the year at Eleanor Roosevelt, West helped the Dallas Mavericks to the 2011 NBA championship.

A two-time All-Met, D.C. native Austin Carr was part of a star-studded 1967 senior class at Mackin Catholic High School. After earning Parade All-American honors, averaged 34.5 points per game during his three-year career at Notre Dame. Carr earned multiple national player of the year honors in 1971. Selected No. 1 overall by Cleveland in the 1971 NBA draft, Carr spent the first nine years of his 10-year NBA career with the Cavaliers. His No. 34 jersey was retired by the team.

A Carroll High graduate, Lawrence Moten is the career scoring leader at Syracuse University with 2,334 points during his four-year career with the Orange. Drafted by the Vancouver Grizzlies in the second-round of the 1995 NBA draft, Moten played professional basketball in the NBA, CBA and abroad through 2006.

A Blair High graduate, Steve Francis led the Maryland Terrapins to a record-setting 28-win season in 1998-99. Francis entered the NBA draft following his junior season, was drafted No. 2 overall and went on to win NBA Rookie of the Year honors. The three-time All-Star played for the Rockets, Magic and Knicks during a 10-year NBA career.

Former DeMatha star Adrian Dantley was named the 1976 National Player of the year in his senior season at Notre Dame. Dantley ranks second on the Irish's all-time scoring list, and helped Notre Dame end UCLA's record 88-game winning streak in 1974. Drafted sixth overall in the 1976 draft, Dantley played for seven teams over 15 years in the NBA, earning the 1976 Rookie of the Year award, a pair of scoring titles and six All-Star selections.

Sherman "The General" Douglas, a Spingarn graduate, set the NCAA's all-time assist record during his four-year career at Syracuse (he now ranks sixth). Selected in the second round of the 1989 NBA draft by the Miami Heat, Douglas played with six teams before retiring in 2001.

Former Coolidge High star Kermit Washington averaged 20 points and 20 rebounds during his career at American University, where he was named a second team All-American. Drafted No. 5 overall by the Los Angeles Lakers in 1973, Washington's eight-season NBA career will be remembered most for his infamous on-court punch to the head of Rudy Tomjanovich in 1977.
