Howard men’s basketball schedule

What we know: The Bison are young, having relied heavily on freshmen during the second half of last season. Despite that inexperience, Howard closed with victories in six of eight games, finished with double-digit wins for the first time since 2002-03 and, with four freshmen starters, won a game in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament for the first time in a decade. Most notable among that group are sophomores Simuel Frazier and Prince Okoroh (Eleanor Roosevelt), who was named to the all-conference rookie team.

What we don’t know: The challenge for Howard this season is take that next step to the upper half of the MEAC. Last season, the Bison were the 10th seed in the conference tournament and upset seventh-seeded North Carolina A&T, 51-50, on the strength of Calvin Thompson’s 15 points. Thompson is one of four seniors whose leadership both on and off the court could go a long way in keeping Howard on track during Coach Kevin Nickelberry’s “five-year plan.”

Prediction: With a renewed focus on recruiting players from the talent-rich D.C. area, Nickelberry has infused optimism into a program that struggled before his arrival. Look for the Bison to continue their upswing this season as they turn their attention to improving shot selection, ball security and rebounding.
