Howard women’s basketball team advances in MEAC tournament

Senior Nicole Deterville made a layup at the buzzer to lift the third-seeded Howard women’s basketball team to a 62-60 victory over sixth-seeded Morgan State on Thursday afternoon in Norfolk.

Fellow senior Saadia Doyle had her ninth double-double of the season with 23 points and 12 rebounds, while senior Cheyenne Curley-Payne tallied her fourth double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Doyle made all seven of her free throw attempts, and Curley-Payne added four assists and two steals.

The Bison, who improved to 19-10, will face second-seeded North Carolina A&T in the MEAC semifinals at 2:30 p.m. Friday.

The Lady Bears, who got a game-high 34 points from Bianca Jarrett, finished the season 13-18 despite taking an early 6-0 lead in the quarterfinal matchup.

UNC WILMINGTON 60, GEORGE MASON 46: The eighth-seeded Patriots rallied in the second half but fell to the ninth-seeded Seahawks in the opening round of the Colonial Athletic Association tournament at Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro.

Janaa Pickard finished with her third double-double of the season, with 18 points and 12 rebounds, as George Mason had a 41-25 advantage in rebounds.

But UNC Wilmington, whose starters played for much of the game, had three players in double figures, led by a season-high 24 points from Kelva Atkins.

The Seahawks (5-25) advanced to the quarterfinal round and will face top-seeded Delaware at noon Friday. George Mason ended the season with a 9-21 record.
