Looking back at Super Bowl I

Forty-six years ago, Vince Lombardi’s Green Bay Packers beat the Kansas City Chiefs.

On Jan. 14, 1967, the day before the first Super Bowl, the Green Bay Packers did calisthenics at the Los Angeles Coliseum while head coach Vince Lombardi examined the condition of the field. The NFL champion Packers would beat the AFL champion Kansas City Chiefs, 35-10.

Packers quarterback Bart Starr was the NFL MVP in 1966 and one of the league's biggest stars. Here he is receiving birthday kisses from a pair of girls on Jan. 10, 1967 in Santa Barbara, California. Starr had turned 33 on Jan. 9, six days before he would lead Green Bay in the first Super Bowl.

The Los Angeles Coliseum had a capacity of 94,500 in 1967, but only 61,946 people attended Super Bowl I there. When the Ravens and 49ers meet in Super Bowl XLVII this week, spare tickets might be a little harder to come by.

Vince Lombardi led the Packers to five NFL championships during the 1960s and to decisive wins in the first two Super Bowls. The trophy currently awarded to the Super Bowl champions is called the Lombardi Trophy.

Bart Starr (15) passed for 250 yards and two touchdowns against Kansas City and was named the first Super Bowl Most Valuable Player. Starr's 13-yard touchdown pass to Max McGee extended Green Bay's lead to 28-10 near the end of the third quarter and essentially sealed the Packers' win.

Large sections of the massive Los Angeles Coliseum were unfilled during Super Bowl I, as football was still a growing sport and fans gave little credence to the American Football League and its Chiefs. The Packers' regular-season game against the hometown Rams drew a bigger crowd than the Super Bowl.
