The Patriots won their second state title in three years last season, but they return just one defensive starter and will have to replace All-Met Offensive Player of the Year Rob Chesson, who set a single-season state record with 49 touchdowns.

Another top rivalry: Chesapeake vs. Northeast (Sept. 28)

The Pasadena neighbors meet annually in the Dena Bowl, which the Eagles have won five times in the past seven seasons.

Players to Watch: TE/LB Auturo Archie, Glen Burnie (6-2, 255, Sr.); RB Lavon Chaney, South River (5-8, 180, Sr.); QB Connor Cox (6-1, 170, Sr.), South River; OL David Dunn, Old Mill (6-3, 270, Sr.); LB Randy Fischer, Broadneck (6-2, 200, Jr.); RB Calvin Green, Severna Park (5-10, 180, Sr.); WR Tyler Young, Arundel (5-9, 180, Sr.).

Howard

Favorite: River Hill (12-2)

Bidding for a repeat Maryland 3A title, the Hawks will lean on explosive senior RB Evan Griffin and powerful senior FB Stephan Osong. Both also start on a defense that allowed eight points per game last season.

Best Rivalry: River Hill vs. Atholton

The Raiders ended the Hawks’ 48-game county winning streak in October 2010. The teams, which are not scheduled to play this fall but could meet in the postseason, split a pair of down-to-the-wire contests last season.

Players to Watch: RB/DB Michael Anderson, Howard (5-10, 175, Sr.); DL/TE Ben Carta, Glenelg (6-4, 200, Sr.); QB Luke Casey, Atholton (6-3, 190, Sr.); RB Dionte Jones, Hammond (5-9, 170, Sr.); OT Moise Larose, Wilde Lake (6-5, 285, Sr.); LB/FB Stephan Osong (6-0, 190, Sr.); RB/DB Jackson Porter, Mount Hebron (6-1, 185, Sr.).
