COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Brooke Griffin had three goals and three assists to lead third seed Maryland past Massachusetts 15-12 Saturday in the first round of the NCAA women’s lacrosse tournament.
Kelly McPartland and Kristy Black also scored three goals for the Terrapins (18-3), who took an early 3-0 lead and never relinquished the advantage.
Maryland led 7-5 at halftime and increased the gap to 15-7 before coasting against UMass (19-2), the Atlantic 10 champions.
The Terrapins will next face the winner of Sunday’s game between sixth seed Loyola and Pennsylvania.
Tanner Guarino, Nina Scarcona and Jesse O’Donnell had three goals apiece for UMass.
A goal by Scarcona got Massachusetts to 10-7 before McPartland scored with 17:41 left to spark a five-goal run by the Terrapins. Black ended the spree, scoring with 6:47 to put Maryland ahead by eight.
