NCAA men’s lacrosse tournament

Today’s games

When: 1 p.m.

Where: Fetzer Field, Chapel Hill, N.C.

Records: Terrapins 10-4, Tar Heels 10-5.

Outloook: Maryland leading goal scorers Grant Catalino (24 goals, 18 assists) and Joe Cummings (24 goals) are questionable to play with unspecified injuries. Both missed a 10-8 loss to Colgate in the regular season finale on May 8. North Carolina used a zone defense extensively in the teams’ first two meetings — each won once — and a zone would seem a good idea again, especially if Catalino, Maryland’s best outside shooter, is out. Against a zone, senior lefty Travis Reed (9 goals, 9 assists) becomes a vital asset because of his strong shooting ability when given time and space. On the other side, keep an eye on senior D Brett Schmidt against North Carolina senior A Billy Bitter (22 goals, 14 assists). Faceoffs may prove crucial.

When: 3 p.m.

Where: Klockner Stadium, Charlottesville.

Records: Bison 14-2, Cavaliers 9-5.

Outlook: Virginia is likely to be without senior MF Rhamel Bratton (17 goals, 5 assists), a four-year starter who was suspended indefinitely late in the regular season. Without Bratton, Virginia has turned to redshirt junior Colin Briggs (22 goals, 12 assists) and senior John Haldy (6 goals, 7 assists) to run the midfield and junior Steele Stanwick (23 goals, 26 assists) to run the attack. Bucknell had an RPI in the top 10 for most of the year and runs a unique defense in the clearing game where the goalie leaves the goal and defends an attackman. On offense, senior Ryan Klipstein (30 goals) is the top shooter and junior Charlie Streep (25 goals) is the best athlete.
