Olympic marathoners face long and winding road in London
The Olympic marathon’s circuitous course doesn’t favor runners who want to lock into a rhythm for two-plus hours. “It’s a marathon with a little bit of cross-country running in there,” said Coach Jerry Schumacher, whose runners U.S. Olympians Shalene Flanagan and Kara Goucher finished 10th and 11th in the women’s race.
