Just under three in 10 Americans are fans of professional soccer and about two in 10 played soccer growing up. They are the natural fan base for the upcoming World Cup games in Brazil. They are far more likely to watch, see the game as exciting and see a growing future for the sport in the United States. Read related article.


SOURCE: This Washington Post-ABC News poll was conducted by telephone May 29 to June 1, 2014, among a random sample of 1,002 adults. Interviews were conducted in English and Spanish on landlines and cell phones. The results have a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points for the full sample, seven for the sample of 265 soccer fans and 8.5 for the sample of 171 who played youth soccer.
