Previewing Maryland vs. Lafayette basketball matchup

Maryland vs. Lafayette

When: 8 p.m. Where: Comcast Center.

TV: Comcast SportsNet. Radio: WTEM (980 AM).

Records: Terrapins 2-1; Leopards 1-3.

Rotation situation: The Terrapins closed strong in Friday’s blowout win over LIU-Brooklyn, settling on one lineup rather than shuffling through their usual 10-man rotation. Coach Mark Turgeon chalked it up to circumstance, calling upon the guard-heavy unit to protect Maryland’s double-digit lead. Both of the Terps’ victories have been clinched late, with that relentless depth wearing down the opposition. Any number of those players could get hot at any given time, so it’s up to Turgeon to mix and match, searching for the winning combination.

Pound the post: With Lafayette’s leading scorer Dan Trist out because of an ankle injury suffered during a morning shoot-around Friday, Maryland should look to work through 7-foot-1 center Alex Len on one block. If the Leopards decide to double the Terps’ leading scorer, James Padgett, Charles Mitchell and Shaquille Cleare should be open on the opposite block, or Maryland’s bevy of streaky perimeter shooters can set up for a skip pass.

String together defensive halves: Turgeon has improved his team’s defense last season’s struggles, but Maryland still has much work to do. A small, speedy LIU-Brooklyn lineup had little trouble penetrating the lane off dribble-drives before it tired late. In the season opener, Kentucky scored with ease off back cuts once defenders jumped to stop drivers. But these Terrapins have been markedly better since the opening act at the Barclays Center and will look for it to continue at home Tuesday night.
