●The Virginia men, who open Friday night against Big East contender Georgetown at Maryland SoccerPlex, will field one of the youngest teams in Coach George Gelnovatch’s 17 years: 18 of 27 players are freshmen or sophomores. Forward Will Bates, who scored 14 goals in 15 matches last year before tearing a knee ligament, is one of just two seniors. The Cavaliers, picked to finish fifth in the league, are seeking a 32nd consecutive berth in the NCAA tournament.
●The Virginia women, also selected No. 5 in the ACC and ranked eighth nationally, began the season without Coach Steve Swanson and sophomore midfielder Morgan Brian. Swanson is guiding the U.S. team at the Under-20 Women’s World Cup in Japan, which runs until Sept. 8. Brian, a 2011 first-team all-American, is a U.S. starter.
●The Virginia Tech men (4-13-2 last year) were picked to finish last, while the Hokies women (14-8-1) were eighth out of 11 teams and ranked 22nd nationally this week.
