U.S. Open TV schedule, draw and preview

August 23, 2014

The main draw of the U.S. Open, the last Grand Slam of the tennis season, will begin Monday and run through Sept. 8.

Last year’s men’s champion, Rafael Nadal, withdrew from the tournament to continue rehabbing his injured wrist, while the women’s two-time defending champion, Serena Williams, will be the tournament’s top seed for only the third time.

The 32-year-old Williams will face up-and-coming American Taylor Townsend in the first round. Williams, a 17-time Grand Slam winner, could play former world No. 1 and eighth-seeded Ana Ivanovic in the quarterfinals and Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova in the semifinals. Kvitova could run into two-time Australian Open winner Victoria Azarenka in the round of 16 and meet Wimbledon runner-up Eugenie Bouchard in the quarterfinals.

French Open finalist and No. 2 seed Simona Halep and fourth-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska are on the other half of the draw. Maria Sharapova, seeded fifth, could play Halep in the quarterfinals, but has a tough matchup in the first round against fellow Russian Maria Kirilenko.

No. 1 seed Novak Djokovic, the runner up last year to Nadal, drew a tough draw with John Isner, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Andy Murray all in the same quarter. He plays the first round against 22-year-old Diego Schwartzman of Argentina and could face Murray in the quarterfinals and Australian Open champion Stan Wawrinka in the semifinals.

No. 2 seed Roger Federer, who is seeking an unprecendented sixth U.S. Open title in the Open era, and fourth-seeded David Ferrer are on  the other half of the draw.  The Swiss could meet Frenchman Gael Monfils in the quarterfinals and Wimbledon semifinalist Grigor Dimitrov in the semifinals. Ferrer is on the same quarter of the draw as 2010 Wimbledon finalist Tomas Berdych.
