Region gained jobs in Dec.
The unemployment rate in the Washington region fell to 5.9 percent to 5.8 percent in December, according to a Labor Department report released Wednesday.
Regional unemployment down
The District’s jobless rate dropped to 10.4 percent from 10.6 percent; Maryland’s dropped to 6.7 percent from 6.9 percent; Virginia’s remained at 6.2 percent.
Region’s jobless rate falls in November
The improvement in the region’s unemployment rate, which had risen steadily amid the debt ceiling debacle and euro crisis, adds to a growing body of encouraging data on holiday retail sales, the housing market and jobs.

For the second consecutive month, unemployment levels dropped substantially in the District, Maryland and Virginia in November.
