Job Description:

Function of the Position:
This is a hands-on, highly technical position that supports the foods standard-setting activities within USPs Documentary Standards Division (DSD). The incumbent is responsible for assisting in the development and revision of monographs, general tests and assays, and responding to internal and external queries related to the Food Chemicals Codex (FCC). These activities require the critical evaluation of relevant documents and other information, the performance of literature searches on related topics, and the development and drafting of pertinent documents for other DSD scientific staff and/or Expert Committee review. The incumbent recognizes when additional expertise is needed and he/she has the ability to put together and manage advisory panels. The incumbent also closely follows the work of other Excipient Committees so that collaboration and exchange of information is seamlessly accomplished and made available when needed. He/she establishes and maintains relevant contacts outside of USP, stays abreast of new findings, and informs other DSD scientific staff of new developments in food quality methodologies.

Roles and Responsibilities:
  • Provides general scientific support to other DSD scientific and managerial staff;
  • Performs the critical evaluation and analysis of specifications supporting data and translating specifications into FCC style and format;
  • Responds to telephone and written inquiries pertaining to FCC monographs and general tests and assays;
  • Keeps abreast of current trends and developments in related scientific fields;
  • Communicates with other USP departments regarding projects related to validation studies, method development, and reference standards;
  • Assists in the formation of USP FCC Expert Committees and in planning and organizing their work assignments;
  • Provides assistance and guidance to Expert Committees for preparation of portions of the FCC;
  • Assists in the activities of USP FCC Advisory Panels and subcommittees, as needed;
  • Serves as a representative of USP at professional meetings, trade shows, and conferences;
  • Gives public presentations on matters related to USP and FCC;
  • Establishes and maintains good working relationships with scientific and trade organizations in the fields of food additives and ingredients;
  • Maintains productive working relationships with Expert Committees, Project Teams, and Advisory Panels.

    Minimum Requirements:
    Ph.D. or equivalent in Food Chemistry, Food Microbiology, Food Science, or related fields and 5 years relevant experience OR an MS in Food Chemistry, Food Microbiology, Food Science, or related field and 7 years of relevant experience.

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
    Proven track record of consistently delivering projects on time and with high quality. Ability to rapidly assess technical complications to identify, to define, and to solve technical issues. Broad knowledge of projects and technologies within and outside the laboratory. Proficient with testing involving analytical methods for raw materials. Proficient in related analytical analysis and instrumentation (HPLC, CE, NMR, ICP, AA, KF, UV, LC/MS, GC/MS). Ability to review, analyze, interpret and report on data from various analytical tests. Knowledge of FCC, Codex Committee on Food Additives and Contaminants (CCFAC), or the Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA). Ability to embrace and lead change. Extremely adaptable. Strong interpersonal skills. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. Strong presentation skills. Solid understanding of the food additives and ingredient industry and the associated regulatory framework. Outstanding written and verbal communication skills. Solid knowledge of MS Office, internet research, and database searches.
