Job Description


The Sr. Systems Engineer is a member of the Enterprise Services team and is responsible for designing, implementing and maintaining varying enterprise systems. Extensive experience with Windows 2003, IIS, Active Directory services, IP networks and server management is the basic requirement for this position. You will provide day to day operational support and will be working with varying business units to deliver technically sound service solutions that meet the needs of the business. You will be responsible for troubleshooting and resolving problems associated with network systems, operating systems, database connectivity, and application performance issues. The ideal candidate must have solid knowledge of and experience with Windows security fundamentals, networking, TCP/IP, and Dell’s server technologies. Knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server is also desired. The candidate must also be able to work effectively in a diverse, highly skilled team and must possess good interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.



Primary Responsibilities



Operational Management
  • Recommend, plan and implement server hardware/software upgrades using industry best practices with minimal downtime.
  • Recommend, plan, implement and support enterprise print services.
  • Coordinate and supervise all release activities into production environment.
  • Automate systems monitoring using standard monitoring tools.
  • Proactively manage and optimize web sites and systems.
  • Manage security vulnerability scanning system and perform routing pre and post production deployment scans.
  • Assist in planning, designing and implementing a high quality production environment.
  • Assist in evaluating, recommending, and selecting equipment, services and vendors.
  • Maintain and update documentation of the computing environment.
  • As a member of the team, respond to all system problems on a 7X24 basis and take part in on-call rotation.
  • Perform standard configuration, management, and maintenance tasks for related file systems, input/output systems, networking, clustering, storage, and applications.
  • Perform and test system configuration backups and restores to ensure system recovery from error or outage.
  • Perform and test data backups and restores, in conjunction with the storage team where present, to ensure full data retrieval.
  • Support application development teams throughout project lifecycles.
  • Monitor, test, and tune system performance; preserve and provide system log files as needed.
  • Fluent in at least one scripting language such as VB Script or Java Script.
  • Provide support for MS SQL database improvements and maintenance, which may include rollouts, upgrades, patches, and database changes approved through the Change Management Process.




Acquisition & Deployment
  • Coordinate with network engineering, business application, and other enterprise functional groups to implement database and other windows based systems.
  • Install and configure MS SQL Server, Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Active Directory and Microsoft Exchange servers.




Strategy & Planning
  • Participate in and support capacity planning and the development of long-term strategic goals for web enabled systems and software in conjunction with end-users, developers and department managers.
Required Experience


Formal Education & Certification
  • College diploma or university degree in the field of computer science and/or 10 years equivalent work experience.
  • Current MCSE Certification
  • Microsoft SQL Server Training a plus
  • CISSP certification a plus


Knowledge & Experience
  • 8 years hands-on experience on system administration skills, server build and server troubleshooting in collocation environments. Solid understanding of LAN/WAN technologies and software tools for performance monitoring and troubleshooting.
  • Minimum 6 years hands-on experience in a mission-critical production environment of 100+ servers using Microsoft Windows 2003, MS SQL Server 2000, 2005 and or 2008 and IIS.
  • Solid background with SQL performance tuning.
  • Solid background on TCP/IP networking and troubleshooting in a Microsoft Windows networking environment.
  • Experience with Dell server hardware, VMware and business suite management software.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Active Directory, LDAP and security best practices with Windows 2003 minimum.
  • Extensive knowledge of Windows command line utilities and tools.
  • Automated Patch Management experience
  • Automation of processes within an enterprise environment
