■Member since 1989 of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council.

■Member of the Assembly of Experts, the body that chooses and has the right to remove the supreme leader (1999).

■A lawmaker in Iran’s parliament (1980-2000), during which he served two terms as the deputy speaker of parliament.

■Iran’s national security adviser under presidents Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani (1989-97) and Mohammad Khatami (2000-05).

■The chief nuclear negotiator for the last two years of Khatami’s presidency (2003-05).

■Member since 1991 of the Expediency Council, which advises the supreme leader on a range of domestic and foreign issues.

■Head since 1992 of the Center for Strategic Research, a foreign policy think tank.
