Bomb explodes onboard USS Cole
On October 12, 2000, The U.S. destroyer USS Cole was attacked by an al-Qaeda bomb while harbored in the Yemeni port of Arden. The explosion killed 17 American sailors wounded 39 others.

The Oct. 12, 2000, suicide bomb attack on the USS Cole in the Yemeni port of Aden left 17 U.S. sailors dead and 39 wounded. The FBI has not linked the bombers directly to Osama bin Laden, but in a videotape the Saudi dissident boasted that his followers were responsible for the attack.
